Favorite Idols: Gen 1

Though I have another page with my favorite groups and bias list, I thought it might be fun to write down my favorite idols themselves and explain why I feel more of a connection to them. This is Generation 1. Let me know your favorite idols in the comments!

Heechul (SuJu)

Heechul stuck out to me immediately when doing my Super Junior review, not in the least because he would inevitably burst on the scene with oversized glasses and some ungodly hairstyle that he somehow made work. I respect it immensely. I now can’t listen to U’s “tarot” line without laughing.

Yesung (SuJu)

If you’ve read either my Yesung or SuJu deep dive, you’ll know the wild story of how I (or really, my mother) found Yesung and promptly fell in love. I mean, he’s covered in tattoos, he runs a travel show that visits Korea’s historical sites, and he has two little balls of fluff as dogs. And he’s just adorable. What’s not to love?

Lee Hyori

Still in the k-pop world at 45 and refusing to leave, Lee Hyori is the definition of a trailblazer and uses her music to uplift other women too. Not only that, but she’s living the dream, rescuing animals and running a cafe in the countryside with her husband. Impeccable.

BoA

Perhaps the only soloist in the same class as The Lee Hyori, BoA is often called The Queen Of K-pop, and for good reason. She’s inspired generations of idols since her debut at age 13 and shows no signs of slowing down. She’s now paying it forward by being the manager for newer k-pop groups like NCT Wish.
